At the US Open, Gail nearly stunned the professional world as she held set point on the 15th ranked Agnes Savay of Hungary in the first round of the 2008 Women's US Open singles. Savay recovered and won the set and the match over Gail 7-5, 6-3, but Gail served notice that she was the top young American in the draw and she will be a force on the WTA tour in the future.

"How do I assess my match? Wow. I was pretty nervous in the beginning. To start out, I mean, I've never been in a situation like this before, so it was an interesting experience. I wish I could have had a better start. That would have probably given me a little bit more confidence in the end of the second set, or first set I mean, when I had a set point. But overall I think I think I played pretty well. I mean, she is No. 14 in the world, so she's definitely a great player. But I think I did I did okay, I think," said Gail during her post interview at the Open.

Gail then entered the US Open Junior Singles Event and reached the Quarter-Finals falling to France's Kristina Mladenovic 5-7, 7-6, 6-4 in a great match.
