Former Weil Student Sesil Karatancheva captures Jr. French Open Crown for first Jr Grand Slam Title improves WTA ranking to Top 150!
Former Weil student, Sesil Karatancheva, who won the Orange Bowl Girls 12s while at the Weil Academy, won her first Jr. Grand Slam Singles Title this past summer by taking the Jr. French Open Singles championship in Paris. This was one more win in a breakout year for Sesil. In early spring, Sesil won her first WTA Title in China winning a Challenger level event which got her a wild card into the prestigious Indian Wells Event in March.
At Indian Wells, Sesil won 2 rounds in the main draw beating American Alexandra Stevenson in 3 sets, then defeating #26 in the world Magui Serna after being down 3 match points. This victory got Sesil a match-up with teen phenom Maria Sharpaova in the third round. The Weil Academy was there to support Sesil, but Sharapova was too strong wining 6-2 in the third set. Sharapova went on 2 months later to capture her first Wimbledon title. Sesil finished off her summer by qualifying for the US Open Main Draw and representing Bulgaria in Federation Cup play. All while she is just 15 years old!!
Weil Head Coach Dimitar Yazadhiev who has coached Karatancheva since she was 9 yrs old isn't all that surprised by the teenager's results. "I knew Sesil could have this kind of success-she was ultra competitive from a young age. I could see she had talent and now her talent is really showing through. I am very happy for her and wish her more success."
