Weil senior Kallim Stewart, 18, #1 Ranked in Boys 18s US and USTA Winter National
Champion, has accepted a full tennis scholarship to the UC Berkeley Men’s
Tennis Team confirmed Bears Head Coach Peter Wright. Berkeley was Stewart’s
first choice and though he was recruited by other top schools like Stanford,
USC, Michigan, and Illinois, KJ had an easy choice to make.
“Berkeley is where I have always wanted to go. Coach Wright is a great
coach—a coach I can talk to man to man—and he can help me become
a better player, help me understand how to compete better,” said Stewart.
UC Berkeley is the #1 Ranked Public University in the United States and plays
a great PAC 10 schedule which included the prestigious Ojai Tournament, which
Kallim has won.
“My goals are to help bring Cal its first NCAA Title and turn professional
in a couple of years. I want to be part of a really good team, a team in the
Top 10, and at Cal I believe we can do that. I’m also excited about the
academics—Cal has a laid back environment with an intense critical thinking
atmosphere.”
Stewart finished his junior career this fall by winning 2 prestigious titles
in a row, the California Bowl National and USTA Winter National. Kallim defeated
#1 ranked Justin Kronauge 6-3, 6-3 in the final of the Winter National to take
over the #1 spot and finished the 2005 year as the #1 ranked Boys 18s in the
US. Kallim will play more professional and men’s events in the spring—Stewart
has gone 8-4 in pro qualifying and main draws this fall—as he prepares
for college tennis in the fall of 2006.
Senior
Kirsten Flower of Columbus, OH began at Weil 2 years ago and was ranked #1 in
the US in Girls 16s before being recruited by Tech’s Head Coach Bryan
Shelton.
“ We have a great group of girls coming in with me—Amanda Craddock
is one— I’m so excited to be a part of such a great program with
such a great coach—Bryan Shelton”, said Flower.
Georgia Tech had an incredible run in 2005 reaching the NCAA Quarterfinals
and a Top 5 Final Ranking in College Tennis. Flower will play the Jr. Grand
Slams in 2006 before heading to GT in September.
